What is Cochlear Implant?

Perhaps the most aggressive solution to hearing loss is the Cochlear implant. The device consists of an external portion that sits behind the ear and a second portion surgically placed under the skin. A cochlear implant consists of a microphone, which picks up sounds from the environment; a speech processor, which organizes the sounds received by the microphone; A transmitter which coverts signals from the speech processor into electrical impulses; and an electrode array, which disperses impulses from the stimulator to the auditory nerves.
