The Effects of Music on the Body and Brain

The Effects of Music on the Body and Brain

Hearing loss is one of the most tragic things an individual can experience. The ability to hear truly brings the world alive for us. It allows us to connect with other people through conversation. It provides us with crucial, detailed information about the world. It also allows us to listen to music. For many individuals, music is an extremely important part of life. Did you know that music can actually have a profound impact on our body and brain?

Elevate Verbal I.Q.

In 2008 a study was performed exploring the effect of music on a group of children age 8 to 11. The results of the study were amazing. It turned out that the individuals who were involved in extra-curricular music classes scored higher on verbal I.Q. test and performed exceptionally well in visual ability testing. This goes to show, exposure to music, especially through learning an instrument, can have a profound impact on our development.

Reduce Stress and Anxiety

Research has shown time and time again the music has the ability to reduce stress and relieve anxiety. Typically, slow temp, low pitch music is best for achieving these results, however this can vary from person to person. Music has also been shown to address the anxiety related symptoms of increases in heart rate and systolic blood pressure. It has also been shown the performing music has a similar effect. Next time you are feeling worried or overwhelmed, consider using music to ease your troubled mind.

Music as a Memory Aid

We have long used silly songs to help us memorize things. As it turns out, our brains are very good recalling beats and melodies. Attaching words is a simple matter. Next time you are struggling to remember something, come up with a little song about it. Don’t be surprised when it sticks in your mind.
